Swingin' Funkie Microbus!!Swingin' Funkie Microbus (1973)—Let's hope that Jackie Starlight's latest album, "Swingin' Funkie Microbus" is finally his last. The album opens with a washed-out imitation of any number of classic Bob Dylan protest songs that in typical Starlight "style" quickly erodes into another over-repeated refrain syncopated by meaningless croonings of "do-be-do-be-do."

Word has it that this was Starlight's obvious attempt to hop on the "hippie" bandwagon, just as he's hopped on so many bandwagons so many times before. "Love Soldier Revue" in particular is astonishing only for the lack of effort put into even trying to hide the fact that the lyrics were ripped off from tidbits of several Beatles psychedlic (and nonpsychedelic) classics.

We understand that Mr. Starlight's few but diehard fans love this album, however, and nothing we print here will dissuade their mindless circling of the wagons around the Great Crooning Idiot whose work we've panned so, so many times in these pages.

Instrumentals by Billy Strahorn's brother-in-law are, however, workmanlike.

Bouquet in Sans-a-Belt album coverBouqet in Sans-a-Belt (1958)—"Jackie Starlight's latest album, 'Bouquet in Sans-a-Belt' reeks with the familiar perfume we've come to expect from this inexplicably popular 'singer.' Why anyone would wish to hear songs like "Ya Ya Ya [extended version]" or "Roll Out the Kaiser (Ya Ya Ya)" is beyond us. Nevertheless, Jackie Starlight continues to enjoy marginal fame in his own particular niche market. Buy this record only if you have absolutely nothing else to do."

   —William J. Hart, Billboard Magazine

" I can't believe this ever hit vinyl!"

   — Rex Reed, TigerBeat

"Jackie Starlight's Lost Years should have stayed that way."

   — Spin Magazine

"Look...I'm good at this. I mean, I can parody just about anything! But how do you make fun of a line like " Mutti always sold me the things that she had told me?"

   — "Weird Al" Yankovich

"Jackie's music continues to be a solid foundation for building sound cultural values."

   — Noam Chomsky

"Maybe if we had a little more Jackie Starlight and a little less Republicanism, this Nation could really get somewhere."

   — George "Jackie-Wannabe" McGovern
